Understanding If Your GP Will Continue to Prescribe Your Medication
Some medicines are started or managed by a hospital specialist rather than your GP. This can happen when a medicine needs specialist monitoring, is linked to a specific hospital treatment plan or is not suitable to be prescribed directly in primary care.
In Greater Manchester, prescribing decisions may be guided by the Greater Manchester Medicines Management Group Formulary, which helps support consistent decisions between hospital and GP care. The formulary explains that prescribing should take into account individual patient circumstances, monitoring requirements, drug interactions, routine specialist appointments and the specialist nature of the condition being treated.
Sometimes, a hospital specialist may start your medication and your GP may continue prescribing it later under a shared care arrangement. This depends on the medicine, local guidance and your individual care plan.
Your GP may not be able to continue prescribing some medicines if they need to remain under hospital specialist care. If this applies to you, your hospital team or The Pharmacy Shop can help explain how your ongoing supply will be managed.
If you are unsure who is responsible for your medication, please speak to your hospital team, GP or The Pharmacy Shop before requesting your next supply.
